That is the 2007 Philippine National Elections. There is probably nothing more closely resembling the Rio Carnivale in the Philippines than the tri-annual National Elections. Because you have the entire country in parades, in street dances, and almost every region is featured at least once a week in the National News.
Panagbenga in Baguio City, Sinulog in Cebu, and where have you festivals all combined, wouldn't quite cut close compared to the circus that is the Philippine elections.
You have candidates the likes of "Lapola" Po (whoever the crotch he is) running for a national position: a senator at that, You have celebrities who don't even know anything that could resemble legislation running for senators, you have nuisance candidates here and there hallucinating that they are the biggest thing since Eddie Gil.
I don't vote in the elections. Because the COMELEC forbid that I submit an empty ballot with nothing but the printed lines on it. So having to have to deal with all the bull come May elections is well not worth it.
But for the love of all things Filipino and nationalistic, I am pretty sure who I will never--I mean never, ever, never in this lifetime--ever vote for. Here are the four that top my list:
(not in any particular order)
Michael Defensor- Unity Ticket
- Liberal Party, "Atienza Wing"
- Former Presidential Chief of Staff (2006-2007)
- DENR Secretary, Head of NHA, QC representative, etc.
- among the many other titles and seats in office he has held through out his entire political career.
Why I will not vote for Mr. Mike "Tol" Defensor: I am not a fan of man-puppies, because man-puppies will only grow up to be man-dogs. And it's not secret, Mr. Defensor may have probably been the biggest fan of the Philippine President. And we all know where his loyalties lie: that little woman in the highest seat of power and NOT the Philippine Nation. Because
we can't obviously expect this man to bite the hand that feeds it, that is the President, and what with everything that the President has been demonstrating, It's scary to put another person in a seat of power that will only seem as an extension of the executive's.
Luis "Chavit" Singson- Lakas-CMD
- Incumbent Governor of Ilocos Sur
- lead witness to the impeachment trial of former President Erap Estrada
Why I will not vote for Mr. Chavit Singson: I am not a fan of man-puppies, or man-dogs. But
what I hate more is a a dog who bites the breast it suckles on when the milk is starting to get sour--only because the milk is starting to get sour. Case in point: mr. Singson. A corrupt official will always be a corrupt official, no matter where you put him. What with more power in his hands, he can only do so little. I am not saying that he won't do good legislating laws, he probably will. And I am not saying that he is the only senator--who assuming will be voted into office--will corrupt the Philippine Treasury, heck, I am assuming everyone else will. But we might as well put someone into office who has an equal balance of loyalty and principle. In the case of Mr. Singson, his loyalties are only to his pockets and to his vices. The moment he notices that his supply of milk starts getting sour and less bountiful, you will see him run into another direction. And pull a complete 180 in the name of "traditional politics".
Also, much as I respect mr. Singson as the Ilocos Sur governor, to have been endorsed by Manny? That's drawing a big red
ex mark right there. What does it tell you if a government official, has thousands of fighting cocks, was the right hand in a big corruption heist, buys front row tickets to A world boxing match--not just for himself, mind you-- and in Las Vegas non the Less. Travelling first class, staying in Caesar's in Nevada, and the list goes on and on, and on. What does that tell you? He has a lot of money. And I mean a filthy amount of offensive riches and wealth. And did you read about the part where he and his "former friend" corrupted the National Treasury?
Richard Gomez and Cesar Montano- actors and showbiz personalities
Why I will not vote for any of them: I wonder has any of them really know what senators do. It's not a glamorous job, you don't get tarp billboards in Edsa just because you passed or read for a certain bill, you don't win "best senator" awards for passing the perfect appropriations bill-- I doubt that will ever happen. I doubt that they even know that UP lacks funds, there's an impending TOFI for SY 07-08, there will be more Filipinos in the call center industry, more will want to migrate to a first world country, and
this country will only be going to the dogs if we put two more showbiz personalities--just like Ramon Revilla Sr.--in the Senate.
I respect Cesar Montano for being a great actor and director, but to run for the elections as a senatoriable? I have yet to rethink why he deserves my vote. And don't get me started on Richard Gomez. bleh.
Although, there skills for reading those 100+ page scripts for their movies will come in handy for all the late-night readings of all the bills that are needed to be passed.
Would we want to put six years of our lives as Filipinos in the hands of those who does not even have any idea of what the current poverty situation in the country is? Who probably, has not even actually read Art VI of the 1987 Constitution?(i know he will not run anymore, but still)
Manny Pacquiao- Boxing Champion
- Product Endorser
- occasionally, a showbiz personality
Why I will not vote for him: I think
he has forgotten that the one thing that Congress men really do the most is READ and try to understand the bills that are being passed. It goes more than saying
hello to the people and handing them out groceries. COMELEC forbid that he box his way out of the appropriation bills, and the more serious matters like Anti-Terror Bills and the Philippine National Security.
I doubt he can even spell legislation much more know the meaning of it. I think this country is so funny that we require low paying government employees to have passed the Civil Service Examinations, when the jobs that they are going to do will be so little as opposed to the people we put in Congress. Heck, a 16,000p job in any of the government departments require that the employee has passed a CSE (and/or a an examination--like the judicial bar--that is similar to it), but a job that is of national scale and a job where the entire nation's lifeline is dependent only require that:
ART VI. Sec. 3. No person shall be a senator unless he is a natural-born citizen of the Philippines, and on the day of the election, is at least thirty-five years of age, able to read and write,....
Somebody please tell me where the logic is in that, because I am having a hard time seeing it.
COMELEC forbid that we have starlets like Katrina Halili, Angelica Panganiban, Mark Herras, running for Senatorial positions the moment they turn 35, without any experience whatsoever. You may have probably won a hundred best actor trophies for portraying a government employee, or a senator, or a national hero, but it does not quite come close to being the real deal.
